Interview:
MDSS: How did hear about MDSS? airbrush1: There was a link to one of your
discussions on another website that I belong to.... I
clicked it, and I'm here!
MDSS: When and why did you purchase the vehicle you
have? airbrush1: I've always liked small RWD sports
cars, I owned an rx7 previously. I got a job at a local
car dealership when I was 20, and really had an
opportunity to drive lots of different makes and models
of car. The Miata just seemed to fit well into what i
was looking for. It was inexpensive, rwd, looked good,
and there was good aftermarket support, as well as a
racing heritage. I saw this particular car about 3 years
ago when it came through as an appraisal purchase and
decided to track it's progress through the
reconditioning process because it was so clean when it
came in. About a week later, I bought it off our front
lot without even doing an official test drive!
MDSS: What kind of condition was it in? airbrush1: When I bought it it had been fully
reconditioned mechanically (brakes, plugs, wires, fluid
changes etc...) and was pertty clean cosmetically. The
car was totally stock at this point
MDSS: Daily, Weekend, show, or race car? airbrush1: I drove it as a daily for around a
year and a half, doin small mods here and there for my
amusement. I installed the turbo system (in it's first
iteration) about 2 years into my ownership, and at that
point it turned into a toy so to speak. I drive it to
shows, weekend events, meets, and when I feel like
having some fun.
MDSS: What modification on your vehicle to you like
the most? airbrush1: I LOVE the turbo build! Stock, these
cars are underpowered to say the least
MDSS: What is the most expensive part on your car? airbrush1: As far as individual purchase price
goes... The Hydra ECU was the most expensive.
MDSS: What was the last modification you installed on
your vehicle? airbrush1: I did the Coilovers, wheels, and
flares all at once a few months ago.
MDSS: What has given you the most headache working on
your car? (Part, experience, shop) airbrush1: My exhaust has been a nightmare! I've
replaced/repaired it 4 times at least. It always seems
to break in just about the same place.... West Virginia!
I finally got a flex pipe installed, and it seems to be
holding up well now though.
MDSS: How much of the work have you gotten your hands
dirty with versus outsourcing to a shop? airbrush1: At this point, I've done everything
except for the welding, tuning, and the coilover
install. I can't weld, tuning scares me, and it was cold
when the coilovers came in!
MDSS: Are there any future plans for this vehicle? airbrush1: The car is ever changing, I have plans
for either a motor build, or an LSX swap in the future.
I also plan a re-paint, a sound system, and an interior
makeover. The outside of the car is pretty much where I
want it to be, but the paint is getting a bit old for my
tastes. I'm a painter and the smallest imperfections
bother me. I'd like some different wheels also, Work,
and J-line wheels are favorites of mine, but a bit cost
prohibitive. As for the motor build/swap, I'm torn
between 4cyl power and an increase in boost, and an
expensive V8 swap. A 4 cylinder build could net me the
power and torque I'd like from a v8 build, but would be
much higher strung. An LSX swap would be costly to say
the least, but would net me effortless power and
reliability.
MDSS: How long have you been working on the Miata? airbrush1: As long as I've had it, around 4
years.
MDSS: Are you into the show or race scene? Or both? airbrush1: I do show the vehicle when I get a
chance. I enjoy hanging out and talking to people at
shows, seeing all the other cars etc... but I don't
really think the car is show worthy, judges seem to
agree. As for the race scene, I built the car so that it
could do well in a race scenario, but I haven't had a
chance to engage in any sanctioned events.
MDSS: Do have any sponsors? airbrush1: I wouldn't say I have any official
sponsors. Agile Auto has been more than helpful, and
very accommodating to me when it comes to tuning, fab,
and appointment scheduling, so I run their window banner
as a thank you for all their hard work.
MDSS: Are you a member of a car club or part of a
local car crew in your area? airbrush1: I am a BASC (Bel Air Subaru club)
member, I may not own a Subaru, but I feel very much a
part of the club. Everyone is awesome, and we really
click on an automotive and personal level.
Shout outs:
Hill and the employees of Agile Auto for putting up with
me. My friends for helping me install parts at odd times
(thanks Brent for helping with the 7 hour header install
in your parents garage until 3am)
My family for trying their best to accommodate my
addiction. The folks at Miataturbo.net for answering my
questions and helping me along the way in my turbo
build.
