Interview:
MDSS: How did hear about MDSS?
That7Guy: I don't really remember. Probably
through on of the other 8,510,693 forums i'm on.
MDSS: When and why did you purchase the ride you
have?
That7Guy: Two years ago this month. I got it
because its cheap, super easy to work on, fun and
preforms great.
MDSS: What kind of condition was it in?
That7Guy: Decent for a 17 yr old car. The PO had
all kinds of antenna's and useless wires dangling about.
The paint felt like sandpaper and the trunk was horribly
resprayed but the engine internals were top notch.
MDSS: Daily, Weekend, show, or race car?
That7Guy: It started out as a weekend car but
became so much fun to drive that I just couldn't bring
myself to put it back in the garage on Sunday. My DD now
sits in my driveway with a dead battery.
MDSS: What modification on your vehicle to you
like the most?
That7Guy: The Turbo and everything that goes
along with it. The Miata's 'Achilles Heel' is the lack
of HP and the turbo really shot up the power to weight
ratio. The car handles great stock but with the Flyin'
Miata Stage 2.5 suspension really makes it drive on
rails.
MDSS: What is the most expensive part on your
car?
That7Guy: Probably all the go-fast things like
the engine and suspension.
MDSS: What was the last modification you
installed on your ride?
That7Guy: A splitter on the front air dam and a
SPEC Stage 2 clutch.
MDSS: What has given you the most headache
working on your car? (Part, experience, shop)
That7Guy: My intercooler piping is driving me
insane! Trying to get 2" diameter piping around very
tight spaces not designed for it is extremely
frustrating. I'm still trying to work the kinks and
rattles out. I also hate the 'girly' or 'gay car'
stereotype that is associated with the Miata, although
it is satisfying when when the sound of the turbo and
BOV wipes the smirks and laughter off of ignorant faces.
MDSS: How much of the work have you gotten your
hands dirty with versus outsourcing to a shop?
That7Guy: I bought the car to learn how to work
on them. I think its just as fun as driving them.
Everything was either designed, built or installed by me
except for the roll bar and the clutch. I just didn't
have tools I needed for the jobs at the time. It could
also have been laziness.
MDSS: Are there any future plans for this ride?
That7Guy: Its a work in progress. Next is a
Megasquirt standalone ECU, new injectors and an upgraded
ignition system. It needs a new paint job too.
MDSS: How long have you been working on this
ride?
That7Guy: Since the day I bought it. The second I
pulled into my driveway I started stripping it out and
"adding lightness". The stock engine isn't very powerful
so she needed to go on a diet.
MDSS: Are you into the show or race scene? Or
both?
That7Guy: I built the car to handle just about
anything. I gave it enough power to keep up with the
competition while at the same time keeping it reliable.
It can be easily set up for AutoX or road racing but can
also comfortably cruse around town. It has everything to
meet SCCA and FIA requirements while still being
civilized. I also believe in form follows function so
while its no crazy show car, I think its purdy...
MDSS: Do have any sponsors?
That7Guy: All payed for by me on a college budget
although my parents bought me the roll bar so I have a
slight chance of surviving Armageddon.
MDSS: Are you a part of a local car crew?
That7Guy: Mazda Sports Car Club of Washington,
Capital Drivers Club, Clubroadster.net and
MiataTurbo.net.
Shout outs:
Thanks to Bank of America and Visa for the monetary
support. Also thanks to my 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm sockets
and wrenches and special thanks to my breaker bar for
help with those 17 yr old rusty bolts.
Thanks to Nathan's brute force method, Sam's Chinese
slave labor and Scott's tuning genius.
And of course everyone who voted!
