There's no such thing as a fair market.

Open a repair shop in Germany if you want "fair." This isn't a monopoly at play here.

This is simply mechanics that fell behind the tech curve.

Keith, there is a problem. Manufacturers can doctor standar protocols and leave you requiring their dealer tool to erase codes, and then they can tell you they wont just erase the codes for emissions after YOU fix it.

It is a monopoly and occasionally they have you buy the balls.

VW/Audi? Vag-com we are lucky an intelligent man spent the money to buy a VW 1552 scan tool and reverse engineered it. Can you imagine going to the dealer for every check engine light on a VW/Audi?

I'd have spent thousands having them clear the codes after a fix and then coming back due to the issue not being resolved, etc....

Mercedes and BMW are the same way, I have yet to try the specialist software for those makes as I have no need, but they are 1500$+ compared to the VAG-COM which is about 300-400$

So independent shops are being stamped out.

How'd you feel if your car died in the middle of new mexico with nothing around for 500+ miles and you had no scan tool compatible because the dealer/manu refuses to release the specs and not adhere to standards?

Pretty fucked up, pay probably 1g for a tow to a big city, on top of the repair cost and etc......
